Nigerian Breweries Plc, Nigeria’s leading brewing company, has finalised its acquisition of an 80% majority stake in Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria Limited (Distell Nigeria). This move marks a significant expansion of Nigerian Breweries’ product range beyond its core beer offerings to include a diverse array of wines, spirits, and flavoured alcoholic beverages.
The acquisition, which follows approval from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), involves the purchase of shares from Distell International Limited (now Heineken Beverages Holdings Limited) in Distell Nigeria, as well as the import business associated with Distell International Limited in Nigeria.
Strategic Expansion into New Beverage Categories
Hans Essaadi, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, emphasised that this acquisition aligns with the company’s strategic goals. “This acquisition supports our objective to diversify our product portfolio and tap into the growing wines and spirits market,” Essaadi stated. “We are thrilled to complete this process and look forward to the transformation it will bring to our business.”
Essaadi highlighted the importance of this move in providing access to a comprehensive range of rapidly growing wine and spirits brands. “Our commitment remains steadfast in meeting the diverse needs of our consumers while seizing significant growth opportunities in the beverage sector,” he added.
A New Chapter for Distell Nigeria
Steve Ighorimoto, Managing Director of Distell Nigeria, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. “Joining forces with Nigerian Breweries marks an exciting new chapter for us,” Ighorimoto said. “We anticipate that this will enhance our manufacturing, marketing, and distribution capabilities, driving sustainable growth and delivering maximum value to all stakeholders.”
Distell Nigeria, previously involved in the local production of wines and ciders under licence from Heineken Beverages, will now benefit from Nigerian Breweries’ extensive distribution network and market reach. This acquisition grants Nigerian Breweries access to both local production and the importation of premium brands from South Africa, including Amarula Cream Liqueur, Nederburg, Drostdy-Hof, 4th Street, Bain’s Whiskey, Knight Whiskey, Scottish Leader Whiskey, Chamdor wine ranges, Hunters, and Savanna.
The integration of Distell Nigeria into Nigerian Breweries’ operations is set to enhance the company’s ability to offer a broader range of beverages, catering to evolving consumer preferences and driving further growth in the sector.
