Africa’s premier music talent show, Nigerian Idol Season 9, sponsored by Bigi Carbonated Soft Drinks, made a grand return with its live shows starting on Sunday, May 27, 2024. The much-anticipated launch saw a dynamic display of vocal prowess and stage presence, setting the stage for a thrilling season.
The judging panel, consisting of renowned artists Omawumi, 9ice, and Ric Hassani, were thoroughly impressed by the contestants’ vocal versatility and strength. The competition, known for its life-changing grand prize, showcased a series of captivating performances that delighted both judges and viewers.
The show opened with Chima delivering a powerful rendition of Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” earning accolades from Omawumi, who described it as a “wonderful performance,” with Ric Hassani and 9ice both praising his exceptional delivery.
Gracia followed with an impressive performance of David Guetta’s “Titanium,” her unique voice and synergy with the backup singers leaving the audience in awe. Omawumi hailed it as “incredible,” with 9ice and Ric Hassani also commending her for a “wonderful performance.”
Lammy captivated the judges with his rendition of John Legend’s “All of Me.” The judges were supportive, with Omawumi encouraging him to push further in future performances.
Stevie’s rendition of “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman was a highlight of the evening. Ric Hassani praised Stevie for taking the audience on an emotional journey, stating, “I love that rendition; you took us on a journey and landed us safely.”
Lady Ruth’s performance of Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” was met with enthusiastic approval from 9ice, who remarked, “Great job. Your performance has us getting drunk tonight.”
David Garland delivered a touching version of Harry Styles’ “Falling,” earning praise from Omawumi, who expressed pride in his performance, and 9ice, who commended his efforts.
Maio energised the audience with Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba,” receiving high praise from 9ice, who dubbed him the “posh Wizkid,” and Ric Hassani, who highlighted his versatility. Omawumi described Maio as a “lovely, 360 performer.”
Jennifer’s powerful rendition of Andra Day’s “Rise Up” impressed Omawumi, who called her a “vocal bully” for her emotive delivery. Ric Hassani lauded Jennifer as a “combination of Omawumi and Waje in one.”
Mira Clear closed the night with a powerhouse performance of Sia’s “Unstoppable,” earning applause for her strong stage presence and vocal texture.
Chioma ended the evening with a heartfelt rendition of “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman. Ric Hassani declared it his favourite performance of the night, rounding off a memorable episode.
